The University is holding its annual elections for Residence Hall Directors. Read the article from the university’s website about the upcoming elections. Give yourself 45 seconds to read the article.

Text

Run for Office The University will hold its annual elections in May to appoint five Residence Hall Directors. In order to run, students must live in the Residence Hall that they will represent. The five elected students will be responsible for the management and daily operations of their campus residence hall. This includes reporting to the Director of Residence Life about the needs of residents, but also building residence hall communities, and maintaining the residence hall by promptly and accurately preparing all necessary reports, records, and requests. The hall director is a full-time, 12-month, live- in position.

Question 1

The woman expresses her opinion about becoming a residence hall director. State her opinion and explain the reasons she gives for holding that opinion.

Explanation

First of all, take notes while listening, this will help you have a place to start once you begin speaking. In this exercise, you are asked to summarize someone’s opinion. In order to do so, you will have to use ‘reported speech’. You will then have to use a reporting verb like 'say' or 'tell'. If this verb is in the present tense, then it’s easy because you don’t need to change it in the reported speech (she tells the man that...). However, be careful, because if your reporting verb is in the past tense, then you will have to change the tense in the reported speech (ex: I ran for office => She said she had run for office).

Suggestion

The woman is thinking about running for the upcoming elections and becoming a residence hall director because she sees it as a great opportunity to develop new skills for her future career and this paid job will help her save money as well. She tells the man about all the benefits that come with this position, such as a furnished apartment, a health package, and of course, a good salary. Even though the man thinks that this could have an impact on her student life, she doesn’t really mind since she’s not interested in partying and she’s very dedicated to her studies. She also believes that this job experience will be an asset to her professional career since she will get supervisory experience and she thinks that this will also help her build her personal skills.
