From the beginning of the 19th century, slavery was a burning issue that divided the fifteen states that made up the young United States at the time. In the North, abolitionist ideas had been circulating for a long time and slavery was in the process of being abolished. In the South, however, businesses relied on plantations and black servitude, so slavery was still firmly rooted. In order to fight for equality and freedom, some men and women in the North formed a gigantic underground network called the ”underground railroad” which purpose was to help the slaves to flee the South to reach the Northern States where they could live as free men and women.
